I'm a noobie compared to most but will agree that 78 is better then alot of people make it seem.

To me, They're playing was much tighter in 76, but they had more energy in 78. I have more 78' shows in my collection then 76'.

I believe 78 is when they started to play fast versions of eyes, which i really dislike. However, the fast 78 versions were more stable then the later years fast versions

I dunno, my personal favorite Eyes is 11-4-1977, which is a whirlwind-speed song of soul-smashing insanity.

Also my favorite '78 Eyes is 9-2-78's, which is nice and slow--incredibly danceable--5-minute long funky instrumental intro jam--check it out.

But in general yeah, I agree.

1976 = Very consistent, songs played like they're supposed to be played, very smooth, no fuck-ups.
1978 = Lots of experimentation, wild risks taken, sometimes fucked up, sometimes hit the moon = Better
